Kambo

Introduction

Kambo is an ancient and natural treatment that originates in South America. In recent years in Ireland and globally, it has grown in popularity as a natural remedy to treat a wide range of chronic illness including cancer, depression, addiction, digestive issues and so much more. It can support in the releasing of difficult to access emotions and heavy stagnant energy (traditionally known as panema) that can be related to dis-harmony, fatigue and dis-ease.

It’s a secretion that is made continuously by the Kambo frog (Phyllomedusa Bicolor) that acts as a natural balm for the frog. It’s harvested without causing any harm before being released back into the wild. It’s often mis-represented as a poison, despite having no toxic chemical compounds being present in the secretion. It does however, contain a variety of neuro-peptide and peptides that have different physiological effects on the body, that can be adverse and extreme when mis-used in certain circumstances. It’s therefore important to always work with sufficiently trained and medically supported practitioners, that screen appropriately and have a level of experience that match your needs as a client.

For an overview of Kambo, the typical physical process, what it can be used as a treatment option for and the list of contraindications, check out the file below.

If you have any specific medical or general concerns and/or questions please feel free to contact me via whatsapp. As a part of the IAKP group of practitioners, I also have access to experienced medical support during each phase of treatment.

My experience to date with Kambo

  • Was the first ancestral medicine that I received in 2017 from an IAKP trained practitioner
  • Began learning to screen, facilitate and treat certain conditions in an apprenticeship style, under the guidance of Dr. Mauricio Albanes in 2019. For two years, I supported and guided Kambo ceremony’s within retreat settings.
  • 2020: Completed my IAKP Basic Practitioner training and began holding my own ceremonies for 18months. In 2021, I also lead Kambo information workshops/ceremonies during a weekend at a Shamanic Training Course.
  • 2022: Completed the Advanced Practitioner IAKP training in March, deepening into my practice, learning about working with treatment plans, specific illness and medical conditions including Cancer and Addictions.
  • At the moment: I’m holding private one to ones or small circles from my home in Dublin 12, Ireland and during the retreats I co-run with my partner Rudrani. I’m building my practice towards becoming a Master practitioner.

Personally, my relationship with Kambo has grown deeper and deeper over the last 5 years of us working together. I’ve been able to support people with a wide range of ailments including, addiction to alcohol, cocaine, cannabis, opioids, depression & anxiety, gastro-diverticulitis, digestive issues, chronic fatigue, endometriosis and more.

People who know me, will often see me glowing following holding a ceremony, simply saying ‘I love Kambo’. It’s an ancestral medicine I hold with great respect, reverence and gratitude to and it’s an honour to share this profound & beautiful healing remedy and teacher with the people that come my way.

Treatment Styles I work with

Here is an overview of different styles/techniques that I’ve learned to work with Kambo.

If one resonates for you, I’d be happy to go into further depth during the consultation phase of treatment. While I trust Kambo always works on and goes to the areas of the person that needs it the most, there are certain placements of Kambo that can support in profound journeys and results, while other techniques can be specifically used to support someone with a specific need.

Womb/Energy Kambo: This is a beautiful, dry fasted & generally more gentle form of receiving Kambo. It was created and taught by the founder of the IAKP Karen Kanya. It is named, as it can induce a state of consciousness that resembles the sensations and awareness of being back in the womb or a dreamlike state. It can be of particular benefit to those with: high degrees of anxiety, in palliative care or (with appropriate screening and timing) following serious illnesses or chemotherapy treatment. Ceremony times can vary between 1-3hours in length and generally don’t induce purging.

Treatment Plans: Where specific illnesses/intentions are concerned, we can discuss a treatment plan to support you either for as long as needed or over a long-term where needed. These might include: chronic illnesses, cancer, addiction, your intention to reduce allopathic medication (only done with the knowledge and support of your prescribing health professional). Treatment plans are designed on a case by case basis and we can also talk about different payment and ceremony structures within extensive plans.

A Ceremony

While the effects of Kambo can be unique and change from person to person and from sitting to sitting, the container I hold the ceremony in has a relatively set structure.

Opening the space: Once the person/everyone sitting with Kambo has arrived I begin by opening the space by inviting everyone present to sit in silent meditation as I burn sage, which cleanses the room, the energy field and supports in grounding into the space. I will often then take time to share a guided meditation and a shamanic prayer.

Intention setting/consultation: During this stage, you can share as much about the intention you have as you feel. From there we can talk about the placement of the points depending on your intention/interest. I’ll also give indications for the ceremony at this time.

Sharing Kambo:

The process of sitting with Kambo can take around an hour or so per person. This includes:

  • Drinking Water (20mins): to drink roughly a liter and a half of water. During this time, I will prepare the Kambo for application and make the burns where the Kambo will be applied.
  • Sitting with Kambo (20-40mins): The physical affects are described in more detail in the file above. I hold space to ensure your sitting with it as safely as possible and to support you throughout the journey.
  • Rest (20mins or so): While some people can feel very energized and uplifted after a Kambo sitting, it can generally be quite a physically and emotionally taxing process, after which you are welcome to take some time to lie down to rest and be with yourself. During this time people can go into a peaceful dream like state or even fall asleep for a short while. In some cases, the process can continue through the release of emotions or the physical purge for a short while, after the Kambo has been removed.

Following your sitting with Kambo, I can also offer to share a range of different Rapés (with tabacco or tobacco free) and/or Sananga as an optional complimentary offering. For more information about these, check out the Plant Medicine section.

Breakfast: After your rest you’ll be welcome to have have a cup of tea, some light food (usually a soup or a fruit smoothie) to give back some nourishment to the body following your experience.

Closing the Ceremony: After we’ve finished eating, we gather in the ceremony space and give time for you to share how your experience was, how you’re feeling at present and anything else you’d like to share. I may ask some questions or provide some guidance and reflections to support you along your integration process during this time. I then invite everyone present to once again sit, as I offer a meditation, my gratitude, a prayer or song to bring to ceremony space to a close.

What you need to bring with you:

  • Being fasted – It’s important to completely fast from food from the night before for at least 8-10 hours. A small cup of herbal tea or water is generally fine in the mornings before travelling to the space, but please keep drinking to a minimum before arriving.
  • In general terms, it’s also important to refrain from drinking alcohol or take any other substances at least 2-4 days before sitting with Kambo and to reduce caffeine intake. In cases where frequent alcohol/substance use or addiction is present, please talk to me for further guidance.
  • Breathable/Comfortable clothes that you can move easily in.
  • A hair-tie, if you have long hair.
  • Your own water if you prefer (max needed: 3litres)
  • Your prescribed medication if you take any in the morning. It’s important to wait until after the ceremony to take your medication.
  • If you wear glasses, I will ask you remove them during the process, so you might want to use contacts instead.

FAQ

Will I purge? (i.e. vomit, get diarrhea): While a large proportion of people that sit with Kambo do experience vomiting during the process, it’s not necessarily always going to happen. I don’t believe its essential to the process of healing and attaining the many benefits Kambo has to offer. While people sitting with Womb/Energy Kambo typically don’t need to get sick, nausea and needing to go to the toilet can still be experienced.

How much Kambo do you use? The number of points share during a basic treatment can vary from person to person, treatment to treatment. Typically the number will fall somewhere between 3-9points depending on previous use/tolerance and so on.

What are your boundaries around touch? There are only a few specific times that I touch. These are while making the burns at the beginning and placing removing the points, in the event that you faint to either support you sitting or place you in the recovery position or if you need assistance when walking to the bathroom.

How will I feel afterwards? While people can generally feel a great sense of relief, lightness and clarity following a ceremony of Kambo, there are other instances whereby you might feel quite tired, in need of rest, emotional and generally more sensitive (particularly around the stomach if you purged strongly). Kambo can potentially re-expose people to deeply traumatic memories and difficult to process emotions, as part of the healing process that comes with working with this powerful tool. For this reason, I always recommend for people to take it easy for the rest of the day, eat nourishing food, spend time in nature if possible and have a support system around you if need extra support.

What if I’m trying to get pregnant? Kambo has been used successfully in treating infertility in both men and women. While no results can ever be 100% guaranteed, Kambo can be offered as part of your treatment plan at specific times of your moon cycle. If you at any point, suspect yourself to be pregnant, its necessary to be recently tested before continuing to work with Kambo or not.

Can I receive it while I’m on my period? While I have experience of safely sharing to women that were on their period at the time of receiving, it can come with certain risks which can be discussed if needed. Depending on how you feel about the risk and presence of other conditions (if applicable) it might not be recommended to at this time.

Do you share Rapé during the ceremony of Kambo? There are rare occasions where during the process with Kambo, you might be finding it difficult purge. If all other solutions don’t provide relief, I can offer Rapé to support this process if necessary. That being said, I tend not to force the issue or attach a need onto a physical purge and trust that Kambo is working in tune with the persons highest interest always.
